22 May 2026, 17:10: Follow-up report: Impact of the power cut on the University IT Services core systems
As a result of the power cut on 21 May 2026 in the Freiburg city area, several systems managed by the University IT Services were also affected. The cause was a malfunction in the UPS triggered by the power cut, which damaged some hardware components. Most services were restored during the course of Thursday evening.
More significant issues affected the Nemo HPC cluster and the virtualisation infrastructure for the university administration’s central systems. By the afternoon of 22 May 2026, most of these systems had also been successfully brought back online.
All major systems relating to teaching and learning, university administration, telephony and communications, email and web servers, cloud systems and AI tools are now back to normal operation. Finally, there are only minor restrictions remaining on internal administrative systems and within the HPC cluster, which will be resolved over the next few days.
Thank you very much for your patience and understanding.
We wish you all a lovely evening and a wonderful Whitsun break!
