Machine-Hosting

Machine hosting is a basic service of the computer centre that is provided for other own services and for users who are members of the University of Freiburg.

The basic service includes the provision of installation capacity (19’ rack) or a complete cabinet, power connection (possibly with UPS protection) and network connection. Sufficient cooling is also provided. The service description refers to the respective adopted and valid machine room utilisation regulations.

The range is limited and tied to certain operating parameters. For this reason, it is essential to consult and coordinate with the data centre prior to procurement. Please direct any enquiries to the data centre via the specially set up OTRS queue: 

Server rooms

There are currently a total of three server rooms (also known as machine rooms). Machine rooms I and II are located in the computer centre (location A), machine room III at the KG II location in the city centre (location B). The machine rooms are currently undergoing extensive construction and remodelling with the aim of providing sufficient capacity for the needs of the university and its facilities as well as the possibility of geographical redundancy. The machine rooms will then offer in detail:

  1. Machine room I: ground floor data centre, space for 50+ cabinets. This machine room will be given a high security level as part of the remodelling planned for this year due to central network components and systems requiring special protection. This machine room is only available for internal users (data centre and administration).
  2. Machine room II (a/b): Basement floor of the data centre. The machine room consists of two storage areas (IIa and IIb), each 100m2 in size, for a total of 40 water-cooled cabinets. There are no weight restrictions.
  3. Machine room III (a/b): Basement floor of KG II. The machine room consists of two flexibly separated areas (IIIa and IIIb), one for components of the data centre and the other for machines of the city centre institutes.
  4. Machine room IV is planned for location D (Faculty of Engineering). Once completed, 10 racks for air-cooled components and 10 racks for water-cooled components will be provided here (primarily for scientific computing).
