Considerations in the eScience department for improved protection of the operated infrastructures and disaster recovery
Due to the pandemic, the 28th DFN Conference "Security in Network Systems" will be held online this year. The event aims to combine contributions on current research activities as well as practice-oriented presentations on the topic of information security into an interesting package. The eScience department used the conference as an opportunity to evaluate the current developments regarding security in its own area of responsibility (cf. attacks on the HPC system) and to develop them further with regard to the new HPC system.
Based on the security incidents of recent years, an analysis and thus conclusions were drawn from the incidents as well as a risk assessment. The stateless remote boot used for the "Large Scale Digital Infrastructures", in this case the PC pools with bwLehrpool as well as NEMO and the two clouds, formed a starting point for business continuity. Current security considerations and implementations are discussed and an initial evaluation is derived. This results in modifications to the operating model and a number of upcoming activities. The findings have also been summarized in a paper that will be published as part of the conference proceedings after the event.
