Build up of bwSFS (Storage-for-Science) begins in KG II

Today, with the help of our IT Services operating group, the setting up of bwSFS (Storage-for-Science) has started in machine room III (redundancy location B in the basement of KG II). After commissioning, the system will provide support in the active handling of research data for NEMO and bioinformatics communities and ensure the entry into long-term research data management.

The supplier of the Advanced Unibyte system has started the installation of the bwSFS (Storage-for-Science) in Freiburg (counterpart is in Tübingen). The system will be set up redundantly at two locations in machine rooms II and III. After installation, configuration and adaptation, bwSFS will provide support in the active handling of research data of the university and for NEMO and bioinformatics communities in the state Baden-Württemberg (for example within the framework of SDC BioDATEN and NFDI DataPLANT). It will also support larger projects such as de.NBI/Galaxy. A first use should be possible from November this year.

The coordination with Tübingen and the application and call for proposals were realized on the Freiburg side under the leadership of colleagues from the eScience department (bwHPC-S5, RDMG). Tomorrow, the installation of the primary side will take place in the MS IIa of the RZ. An overview and discussion about RDM and the considerations and developments around bwSFS can also be found on the RDMG's pages on the further education platform ILIAS.
