Here you can find information on the current appointment procedure W 3 professorship "Information Services" in connection with the Scientific Director of the University Computing Centre

The Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg is seeking to fill the W 3 professorship "Information Services" in connection with the Scientific Management of the University Computer Centre (successor Prof. G. Schneider).

  • Application deadline: 31.01.2023
  • Published: 20.12.2022
  • Starting date: 01.10.2023
  • Full-time position
  • Reference number: 00002732

In addition to the usual tasks of a professorship in teaching and research, a central task of the job holder is the scientific management and representation of the University Computer Centre including the existing infrastructures for research, teaching and administration.

We are looking for an outstanding personality with a proven track record in research and teaching and a convincing vision for the further development of a modern IT service centre in university operations, from a relevant academic field (e.g. computer science, business informatics or computer science-related research), for example in areas such as:

  • Communication systems and structures;
  • Virtualisation and container technology;
  • Grid and cloud computing;
  • Big Data and Data Management;
  • Information Systems;
  • Security, privacy and data protection.

Once filled, the professorship will be assigned to a faculty yet to be determined. Teaching duties are expected in one or more of the above-mentioned fields within the framework of the teaching programme of this faculty, as is participation in research in this faculty or in overarching collaborative research projects. Depending on the faculty assignment, participation in the basic teaching of the respective subject is also to be provided. Contributions to interdisciplinary teaching and/or continuing education programmes are desirable.

The management of the computer centre plays an essential role in acquiring IT infrastructure to support research, teaching and administration. Management experience of relevant university institutions as well as proven success in acquiring third-party funding and/or IT infrastructure is therefore expected.

The university faces a number of challenges in the areas of digitisation, research data management, identity and authorisation management, as well as high performance and data intensive computing. It is expected that the future leadership will be significantly involved in the continuation of existing collaborations as well as the development and realisation of new concepts in these areas.

In addition to the general requirements under civil service law, the employment requirements for professors include a university degree, pedagogical aptitude and an outstanding doctorate. Academic achievements beyond the doctorate, which are usually proven by a habilitation, are expected (§ 47 Landeshochschulgesetz (LHG)).

We particularly welcome applications from women for the position advertised here.

The following application documents are requested:

  • Curriculum vitae, references and certificates
  • Complete list of publications and lectures, as well as the 5 most important publications; an existing Google Scholar or ORCID profile should be cleared of errors.
  • Description of previous research work and an exposé for future work
  • Description of previous teaching experience
  • Description of previous leadership experience
  • Description of previous project work; the share of the funding for the own person/group should be clearly visible in each case.

Applicants invited to give a presentation must submit a teaching competence portfolio (https://www.zuv.uni-freiburg.de/formulare/lehrkompetenzportfolio-formblatt.doc); furthermore, an outline for the future design of a university IT service centre is expected.

Please apply with the above documents and the printout of your application form / Bewerbungsformulars, quoting reference number 00002732, by 31.01.2023 at the latest.
