Tuesday, 26.01.2021: (Fixed) Error with eduroam and VPN authentication

During the night from 25.01. to 26.01. there were problems with the authentication in the WLAN eduroam and with the VPN access. These problems have been solved in the meantime.

Switching the cloud storage backend to NFS/NetApp AFF-A400 (full flash)

During the week, the final commissioning and configuration of the new cloud storage backend with a gross capacity of up to 600TByte took place. This component replaces the aging CEPH backend, which was primarily based on a RAID with spinning disks. The associated performance improvement was made possible by the use of de.NBI hardware funds from BMBF funding at the Freiburg site.

Current fault message from Versatel: "During earthworks for planting a tree, our fiber optic line was also damaged locally in addition to power cables. Our technicians are currently on site and are trying to rectify the fault as quickly as possible."

The document of the FDM working group is now being passed on to the rectorates and presidia of the universities in Baden-Württemberg for implementation. It underpins the "Principles for Handling Research Data at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg" with the state perspective.

Since Monday, Jan. 25, starting from ca. 8:30 the telephone connection to our provider Versatel is disturbed or interrupted. The telephone dial-in to the university is therefore only possible to a limited extent.

Failover tests bwSFS (completed)

Yesterday and today the major functional and failure tests of the Storage-for-Science system for research data management (failure of power supply and/or network connections or components) took place. Access to the file server components (basic service NFS or SMB) is now possible for selected users. We are currently contacting these users.

IMPACT: According to planning, there will be a 1/2 hour service outage. However, a longer interruption cannot be ruled out.

Expansion of the de.NBI Cloud at the Freiburg site - +11 TByte RAM

Today, the de.NBI Cloud at the Freiburg site was significantly expanded by more than eleven terabytes of RAM. A total of ten machines have now been upgraded to 1 TByte RAM, allowing even more virtual machines with high memory requirements to run in parallel.

Partial power failures affecting racks in MS II (Site A; completely repaired)

In the course of January 3-4, 2021, there were partial failures at individual power strips or complete racks in machine room II in the basement of the RZ (server room location A), which have been completely repaired in the meantime. In connection with this, some services in the area of bioinformatics, ATLAS, NEMO and the storage system were (potentially) affected. The control and reconnection are in progress.

Upgrade mail and telephony storage on January 7 and 8, 2021 from 8:00 a.m. onwards

Modification or upgrade of the mail and telephony cluster on January 7 and 8, 2021 starting from 8:00 am. The mail system will be temporarily out of operation on these days. Incoming mails will still be accepted and buffered by our mail gateways. The VoIP telephony servers may experience individual disruptions.

Current status of bwSFS and extensions

The setup of the bwSFS hardware including some extensions has been completed to a large extent. Now, extensive failure and failover tests as well as the installation of the first (test) users are pending. The whole thing is happening within the framework of the research data management activities in the state and at the university.

Completed: TSM: Extensive update work from 25.12.2020

Updates completed, server back to normal operation. Clients < version 7.x are officially not supported anymore, please update. TSM servers are upgraded from 7.1.7 to 8.1.9 and new Linux kernel versions are installed. During this time the backup operation is interrupted again and again for 3 - 4 hours.

bwCloud (FR and others): Partial malfunction in the CEPH backend of bwCloud

Currently there is a persistent disruption on the CEPH storage backend of bwCloud in the Freiburg region, among others, which is noticeable for some users and certain volumes. These are only very slow or no longer accessible. The problem is being monitored and the cause is still being researched. One option is to disable the cache.

Currently, bwSync & Share, which is based on NextCloud, is repeatedly experiencing partial failures or very slow response. This is related to an increasing number of users and the associated performance drops in the user database. A solution is underway.
