As a member of Freiburg University, you can set up a personal e-mail on the domain uni-freiburg.de.

UniMailbox for Students with an already existing Communigate address (with a domain of one of the eight planet names or 'students') without a UniMailbox: Setup Period from December 1, 2024, to February 15, 2025

Starting December 1, 2024, all students who currently use a Communigate address (with a domain of one of the eight planet names or 'students') are required to set up a UniMailbox (UniAccount@email.uni-freiburg.de) are required to set one up. Doctoral candidates who use their institute's email domain are not affected by this change and will retain their current university email address. The new mail service has been provided by the Society for Scientific Data Processing mbH Göttingen/Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung mbH Göttingen (GWDG)  under the umbrella of the federated cloud services of the DFN Association on behalf of the University of Freiburg.

 

Detailed Instructions: Setting Up the UniMailbox

Please follow these steps:

  1. Go to https://email.uni-freiburg.de. You will land on the GWDG page of the Academic Cloud.
  2. Enter your future UniMail address in the 'Email/Username' window: UniAccount@email.uni-freiburg.de and click on 'next'.
  3. In the next step, the setup 'Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg' is already pre-selected, which you need to confirm with 'next/continue'.
  4. You will be redirected to the myLogin page and must now authenticate with your UniAccount and password.
  5. Your UniMailbox should now be found in the GWDG database, and you will see the start page of the Open-Xchange web interface. Here, you can access all functions to 'read, write, and sort emails'.   6. Please now enter your new university UniMail address in HISinOne (Service → Personal Settings → Edit Contact Details) into the contact tile (2-K for students or 3-K for doctoral candidates).

 

Please note that transferring your contact data and any existing emails to your new UniMailbox, if desired, must be done by yourself.

All students must set up their UniMailbox by February 15, 2025, to ensure the secure and reliable delivery of essential information such as exam results, schedules, and personal notifications.

This UniMailbox will be the sole email address used for all correspondence related to your studies or enrollment at the University of Freiburg. Therefore, it is essential that you check your UniMailbox regularly, for example, to receive notifications from central systems like HISinOne or the learning platform that are directly connected to your courses. Additionally, please use this UniMailbox for all study- or PhD-related inquiries — whether to the Dean’s Office, the Examination Office, or instructors.

UniMailbox for newly enrolled students and newly enrolled doctoral candidates starting from August 1, 2024.

Since August 1, 2024, newly enrolled students and newly enrolled doctoral candidates automatically receive a personal UniMailbox after enrollment. This mail service has been provided by the Society for Scientific Data Processing mbH Göttingen/Gesellschaft für wissenschaftliche Datenverarbeitung mbH Göttingen (GWDG)  under the umbrella of the federated cloud services of the DFN Association on behalf of the University of Freiburg. The UniMailbox is automatically created after enrollment. You can set up access to it through a self-registration feature.

The UniMailbox address has the following format: <UniAccount>@email.uni-freiburg.de and the alias firstname.lastname@email.uni-freiburg.de.

 

This UniMailbox will henceforth be used as the sole email address for correspondence related to your studies and enrollment at the University of Freiburg.Therefore, it is extremely important and essential that you regularly check this UniMailbox, for example, for notifications from central systems such as HISinOne or the e-learning platform, which are directly related to your courses. Please also ensure that all study- or doctoral-related inquiries, whether to the Dean's office, the Examinations Office, or faculty members, are always made through this UniMailbox.

UniMail for newly enrolled students and newly enrolled doctoral candidates before August 1, 2024, and since March 15, 2023.

Enrolled students and phd students automatically get an UniMail in the form uniaccount@students.uni-freiburg.de

 

UniMail for students who were enrolled before the summer semester of 2023 and who do not yet have a UniMail address, and for employees.

For students who have already been enrolled before SS 2023 and have not created an UniMail yet:

log in to myAccount and select go to the menu item "Mail & Lists Administration -> UniMail Account". Select your UniMail address in the desired format.

The UniMail has the following format:

vorname.name@domain.uni-freiburg.de

Students can choose between eight planet names or 'students' as domain.

 

For employees, the name of the institute/institution appears as domain (e.g. vorname.name@rz.uni-freiburg.de for employees of the Computer Center). If your institution operates its own mail server, myAccount points this out and provides information about the special method of application.
 

E-mail account properties

  • available memory:
    • Students 500 MB
    • Employees 2 GB
    • It is possible to expand the memory space if required.
  • Spam and virus protection
    The e-mail account is secured with various anti-spam and anti-virus systems.
  • worldwide access via webmail All owners of email accounts can access their emails worldwide via the webmail interface https://mail.uni-freiburg.de . To login please  use your complete email address and Password of your Uni-Account.
  • Imap access for mail clients (e.g. Outlook, Thunderbird or Smartphones)
    The university's email account can of course also be managed on your computer using common email programs (e.g. Mozilla Thunderbird or Microsoft Outlook).


Optional additions:

  • Calendar and groupware functions are available for employees as well as for students.
