Microsoft products for employees

Through the university framework agreement, the computer centre enables all employees of the University of Freiburg to use Microsoft products for business purposes

The Computing Centre has initially procured sufficient Microsoft 365 A3 licences for the entire university. The following products are currently available to choose from:

Restrictions:

The licences provided by the Computer Centre are only valid for use in conjunction with official hardware of the University of Freiburg. Use on private devices is excluded.

There is currently no data protection approval for an online storage service from Microsoft, which is why it is not possible to use Microsoft Web Apps (Office 365, Teams, etc.).

Costs:

For employees, the licence costs are allocated via their institution/faculty regardless of use.

Data protection:

As the currently available products are subject to the same data protection regulations as before, make sure that you configure Windows so that, for example, telemetry data is not transmitted. Please read our article on Windows 10 - business use and follow the instructions in our wiki.

Windows Enterprise Upgrade

Important note on the procurement of service devices:

Please note that you must have purchased a basic operating system licence for your PC or notebook in order to use the Windows upgrade. Qualified operating systems that entitle you to a Windows upgrade within the meaning of the university framework agreement are:

Upgrade to
Windows 10 Enterprise Qualifying Operating Systems (see right column: academic)
Windows 11 Enterprise Qualifying Operating Systems (see right column: academic)

When purchasing new hardware, you must therefore ensure that you always purchase a Windows licence together with the hardware if Windows is ever to be used on the system. This also includes virtualisations. Procurement without an operating system is not permitted if the system does not remain Windows-free. It is also important to ensure that the Windows licence is supplied on the device by the OEM (manufacturer) and not separately, otherwise the KMS server will refuse activation.

If you are unsure or have any questions, please contact the licence management team:
